Fire services inspects party venues

June 29, 2015

The Fire Services Department carried out 28 safety inspections on public entertainment venues yesterday, amid concerns over the use of flammable powder following an incident in Taiwan.

Hundreds were injured during an event in Taiwan yesterday when a coloured powder ignited after being sprayed onto the crowd.

Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Tsang Wing-hung reminded event organisers during a press conference today to strictly observe fire safety requirements, adding that officers had not found flammable powder being used at the venues.

Mr Tsang stressed that the inspections will continue.

He noted that a licence is required to stage public entertainment events and the department will issue fire safety requirements and advice to the applicants.

An application has been made for an event at Asia World Expo next month, which listed the use of coloured spray paint as one of the highlights, but Mr Tsang said the organiser had confirmed at a meeting today that no flammable powder would be used.

The department will formulate appropriate fire safety requirements for the organiser to implement before issuing a fire safety certificate for the event, he added.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department also said today that it is processing the Asia World Expo event's application for a Temporary Places of Public Entertainment Licence, adding that it will consider each application thoroughly to ensure that the activities will not endanger public safety or pose any threat to the personal safety of participants.
