$22m in smuggled electronics seized

Computer cache:  The electronics were hidden in the passenger baggage hold of a cross-boundary coach.

Customs officers yesterday seized electronic products worth $22 million and shut down a syndicate using cross-boundary coaches for smuggling.

 

Nine suspected syndicate members including the mastermind, aged between 25 and 56, were arrested.

 

Officers stopped an outbound cross-boundary coach at Shenzhen Bay Control Point yesterday morning. A total of 1,000 mobile phones, 457 computer tablets and $7 million-worth of electronic parts were found hidden in the vehicle's passenger baggage hold.

 

A large batch of electronic products, including 1,269 mobile phones and 1,397 computer tablets was also seized from two coaches and two light goods vehicles in Yuen Long and Ma On Shan.

 

Customs officers also confiscated 168 computer tablets and $3 million-worth of electronic parts during a search of two warehouses in industrial buildings in Shatin.
