The Labour Department has reminded employers of foreign domestic helpers not to abuse or exploit their workers.
The warning came today after an employer was jailed six years for assault and intimidation, non-payment of wages, non-granting of statutory holidays and rest days, and failure to take out employees' compensation insurance.
She was also fined and ordered to pay outstanding wages.
It said employers are criminally liable for their failure to pay wages or grant holidays or rest days to their employees as required by the Employment Ordinance, or take out employees' compensation insurance policies.
The department urged any worker to contact it if they felt they were being deprived of their statutory or contractual employment rights and benefits.
The department has boosted publicity to educate foreign domestic helpers on personal safety and seeking redress through government channels.
