Court not solving political issue: SJ

November 18, 2014

Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen says the Government has no intention of using the courts to resolve political problems.

He made the comment today in response to comments by former Chief Justice Andrew Li who said yesterday that courts or legal means cannot solve political problems, which must be dealt with by consultations in the political arena.

He agreed with Mr Li, but added the occupy movement involves legal issues, so citizens have the right to turn to the courts.

Mr Yuen noted it was those affected by the occupy protests who applied for an injunction, so the court has to deal with a politics-related legal issue.

He also told reporters the Department of Justice decided not to take over injunctions applied for by private litigants after examining all factors.
