Police condemn barrier reinforcement

October 13, 2014

Police and the Fire Services Department expressed deep concern after people illegally occupying roads reinforced barriers with bamboo poles and wooden planks in Queensway, and sealed barriers with concrete in Causeway Bay.

Police said such illegal and irresponsible acts might cause injuries to people and limit emergency vehicles' prompt access.

To ensure public safety and order, Police must take necessary action to remove the barriers at the occupied spots so that traffic can be partially resumed. They appealed to protesters not to obstruct or charge police officers when they remove the barriers.

Police do not rule out using the lowest level of force to remove people causing obstruction, and may arrest them.

The Fire Services Department also strongly condemned these acts, which created unnecessary high risks to buildings and residents located within the barricaded area. It could lead to loss of lives and property in the event of fire or when sick or injured people require immediate medical attention.
