Police arrested 19 people to safeguard people's safety on Harbour Road in Wan Chai last night, the force said in a statement issued today that condemned the protesters' actions as "irresponsible and unlawful".
The protesters forced their way onto the road and affected traffic in the vicinity, despite repeated appeals and warnings, the statement said.
The 15 men and four women aged 20 to 45 were arrested for obstructing police officers and taking part in an unlawful assembly.
Police reiterated that while they would facilitate all lawful and peaceful public events, they must ensure public safety and order, and appealed to people to obey the law.
