Customs issues trafficking caution
August 23, 2014
The Customs & Excise Department has appealed to the public, particularly young people, to resist the temptation to smuggle drugs.
The department's Deputy Head of Rail & Ferry Command Wong Jug-tung made the appeal today, saying Customs officers at Lo Wu Control Point seized 8.2kg of drugs worth $2.2 million in the last three weeks.
He said offenders generally make use of heavy passenger traffic to evade detection, hiding drugs in body packs, in clothing and shoes, or in boxes, bags or luggage.
Officers use advanced equipment and sniffer dogs to identify suspicious travellers.
He said Customs will continue strict enforcement against trafficking, warning that smugglers face life imprisonment if caught.
