August 21, 2014

The Customs & Excise Department has arrested 75 people, aged 15 to 85, and seized 920,000 illicit cigarettes worth $2.4 million in a two-month crackdown.

Customs officers arrested the 68 men and seven women, including 47 buyers, in a series of enforcement actions in July and August, targeting the buying of illicit cigarettes via telephone.

Five vehicles used for delivering the cigarettes were also seized.

In the first seven months of the year, the department detected 146 illicit cigarette cases involving telephone ordering, up 30% on the same period last year, and seized 1.9 million cigarettes, up 90%.

Report suspected illicit cigarette activities by calling 2545 6182.
