July 31, 2014

Customs officers seized $14 million worth smuggled electronic goods and arrested 14 men aged 24 to 64 in an anti-smuggling crackdown in the New Territories yesterday.

Customs officers stopped five outbound container tractors with trailers declared to be empty at Sha Tau Kok Control Point. They found 1,430 smartphones, 300 smartphone boards, 5,000 central processing units and 5,000 computer RAM chips, worth over $11 million, concealed inside false compartments of the trailer axles. They found another eight trailers with 4,000 central processing units and 5,400 computer RAM chips worth about $2.7 million in a fenced cargo yard in Tuen Mun.

Under the Import & Export Ordinance, any one found guilty of exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum $2 million fine and seven years in prison.
