Crime hits 34-year low

Hong Kong’s overall crime figure for the first half of the year dropped 6% year-on-year to 33,916 cases, the lowest since 1980.

 

Police Director of Crime & Security Lo Mung-hung told the media today 5,418 violent crime cases were recorded during the period, a drop of 10.8%.

 



Falls were seen in cases of homicide (-75.5%), rape (-62.7%), robbery (-31%), indecent assault (-26.4%), juvenile crime (-20.2%), burglary (-18.3%), domestic violence (criminal) (-13.2%), wounding and serious assault (-12.5%), triad-related cases (-11.6%) and criminal damage (-10.7%).

 

However, a rise was seen in the number of deception and blackmail cases.

 

There were 422 blackmail reports, a rise 172 cases or 68.8%, mainly due to the ‘Naked Chat’ scam.
