Two sentenced in illicit cigarette blitz

July 14, 2014

Two men aged 24 and 26 were given community service orders after their prosecution for aiding and abetting others to sell illicit cigarettes.

During an illicit cigarette seizure in March, Customs officers learned that the two men had provided their mobile phone numbers to a cigarette smuggling syndicate for receiving telephone orders. The pair was arrested.

This was the first successful case in which Customs applied the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance to prosecute criminals for offering their registered telephone number to a syndicate to take orders for illicit goods.

They were sentenced to 120 hours and 180 hours of community service.
