Safe cycling campaign to launch

April 08, 2014

A citywide safe cycling campaign starts tomorrow through April 15, with Police officers taking stringent enforcement action against cyclists for disobeying road rules.

Police today reminded cyclists they are subject to the Road Traffic Ordinance and must obey all traffic laws.

The first two months of this year saw 366 traffic accidents involving bicycles, resulting in 376 cyclist casualties. Both figures are down 8% from the last year.

None of the accidents in this period resulted in death, compared with one fatality in the same period last year.

Common cycling offences include failing to comply with traffic signs or road markings, riding on footpaths, carrying another person, carrying an animal or article which obstructs the cyclist's view, and riding without lights.
