Safe cycling campaign set

November 12, 2013
Police will conduct a city-wide campaign from tomorrow to November 19 to raise cycling safety awareness.

Officers will distribute leaflets and crack down on cycling offences.

Once on the road, cyclists must obey all traffic laws that apply to drivers, and are subject to the Road Traffic Ordinance. Common cycling offences include failing to obey traffic signs or road markings, riding on the pavement and carrying another person.

In the first 10 months, there were 2,118 bicycle accidents resulting in 2,188 cyclist casualties, both down 4% year-on-year. Seven cyclists died in traffic accidents during the period, one less than in the same period last year.
