Philippine decision 'disappointing': HK

October 12, 2010

The Hong Kong Government has expressed disappointment at the Philippine authorities' decision to lessen the recommended actions against the officers named in the first report by the inquiry committee reviewing the Manila hostage tragedy.

The Government said tonight it is hard for Hong Kong people, especially the survivors and the victims' families, to accept Manila's move. It said the Philippine government should impose the suggested actions, saying it must comply with its pledge to be accountable to the public.

Noting the Philippine government has not completed its investigation, Hong Kong called on Manila to make its findings public as soon as possible.

The Philippine review committee will submit a second report soon on the mechanism and procedures for handling similar incidents. The Hong Kong Government hopes the report will include concrete improvement measures to avoid a recurrence of similar tragedies.

The Hong Kong Police is gathering evidence for the Coroner's Court to consider whether a hearing is required.
