Air traffic system safe

November 25, 2016

The occasional occurrence of a flight not being immediately identified on the radar is not because the new air traffic management system has failed, and there are no safety implications, Director-General of Civil Aviation Simon Li said.

The Civil Aviation Department introduced the new Air Traffic Management System to the media today.

Officers presented the advanced features and design of the new system at the Air Traffic Control Radar Simulator.

Mr Li said it is not unusual for the above occurrence to be more frequent, when the new system is in operation for the first few weeks.

“We hope that through fine tuning and enhancement, the situation will be further improved,” he added.

He said that the new system has been operating smoothly since it came into full operation on November 14.

More than 1,800 flights are handled daily and none have been delayed because of the system migration.
