No failure in air traffic system

November 24, 2016

The occasional occurrence of a flight not being immediately identified on the radar is not because the new air traffic control system has failed.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung made the statement today in response to safety concerns over an aircraft that went missing on radar screens for 12 seconds last week.

Prof Cheung said such occurrences also happened on the old system and at international airports with frequent flight movement.

He said the loss of a plane on radar happens from time to time due to various reasons, including the weather and the plane itself.

There is no question of safety being compromised, he said, adding air traffic controllers can switch the system to local mode if necessary.
