The Civil Aviation Department has reported the loss of a plane on its new air traffic control system to the supplier for investigation.
Director-General of Civil Aviation Simon Li said today the move is to allow the supplier to fine-tune the system, which is he said is otherwise running smoothly.
On November 15 the position of a departing plane was not displayed momentarily on the radar screen at the Air Traffic Control Centre. The plane’s position was shown again within 12 seconds.
Mr Li said the incident had no safety implications, adding air traffic controllers can switch to the mode of operation if necessary.
"If the supplier can manage to fine-tune the system to further reduce the loss time of this target, that would be much better."
He said the new air traffic system has been operating smoothly since it came into full operation on November 14.
More than 1,800 flights are handled daily and none have been delayed because of the system migration.
It is normal that a new air traffic control system needs fine-tuning and adjustments to work in sync with the local aviation operation, he added.
