Estates pass asbestos checks

October 20, 2016

The majority of building components with asbestos-containing materials in old public housing estates are in good condition.

The Housing Department announced today the findings of the latest comprehensive survey on the condition of asbestos-containing materials.

The survey found that only a small number of building components required follow-up action and the department has been conducting these follow-up works.

The findings were reported to the Housing Authority Building Committee today.

The department said it stopped using asbestos-containing materials in construction in 1984 and removed most the materials in older buildings built before then.

The small amount remaining is mainly in encapsulated balcony grilles in domestic units, staircases and lift lobby grilles, and chimneys in old estates, which are unlikely to cause health hazards under normal circumstances.

The existing management measures for asbestos-containing materials are largely effective, the department added.
