New parking meters go on trial

October 17, 2016

New parking meters will be commissioned in four districts under a trial scheme in late October for motorists to use different methods of paying fees, including contactless credit cards.

The Transport Department announced today the launch of the New Parking Meter System Trial Scheme.

Under it, meters will be equipped with new features.

Parking fees can be paid via Visa payWave, MasterCard Contactless and UnionPay QuickPass, along with Octopus cards.

Logos for these payment modes will be affixed to the parking meters.

The first phase of the trial will start on Fung Kwan Road in Yuen Long as well as Tung Choi Street and Sai Yeung Choi Street South in Mong Kok on October 21.

The second phase will begin in Sai Kung and Wan Chai in the second quarter of 2017.

Each phase will last nine months and involves 20 new parking meters, covering 60 parking spaces.

The department hopes to start replacing all 9,800 existing meters in 2020.
