Wang Chau group met only once

(September 17, 2016)

An inter-departmental task force was once formed to discuss issues relating to public housing development at Queen's Hill and Wang Chau. The task force, chaired by the Chief Executive, met only once on June 27, 2013.

The Government made the statement tonight in response to media enquiries on the Wang Chau development plan.

The statement said the implementation work for the development of Queen's Hill and Wang Chau was carried out in accordance with the usual procedures.

According to informal consultations for the Wang Chau development, local communities had a number of concerns about developing 17,000 public housing flats there, including concerns about the need for infrastructural support, environment impact and brownfield issues.

It said: “We have to consider in detail whether there are solutions, acceptable to the public, which can address such concerns. But this does not mean we will give up these plans simply because of such opposition.”

It reiterated that the second and third phases of the Wang Chau development required arrangements for infrastructure works including transport, water supplies, drainage, as well as dealing with the environmental and brownfield issues, which takes a long time.

The Government decided to start the phase one development first to avoid delays to the public housing development.
