Marine traffic system upgraded

July 21, 2016

The Marine Department today unveiled the upgraded third generation Vessel Traffic Services system, which has gradually come into operation since March.

Its 13 radars can track up to 10,000 marine targets simultaneously, compared to 5,000 tracked by the previous generation.

The department said it meets operational needs up to 2030.

The system's ability to detect vessels in inclement weather has been enhanced, allowing the department to monitor and regulate marine traffic more effectively.

Director of Marine Maisie Cheng said the department has implemented a series of improvement measures to enhance marine safety.

They include better surveying of local vessels, enhancing look-out duties by crew on vessels and strengthening coxswain training.

The department is also improving its internal governance and work culture.

It will implement more improvements in future, such as reviewing the regulatory regime for local pleasure craft, tabling legislation to control boating while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and reviewing the coxswain licensing system.
