TAC briefed on taxi proposal

June 28, 2016

The Government consulted the Transport Advisory Committee today on the proposal to introduce premium taxis.

The committee noted the Government's preliminary proposal to grant three franchises under a trial scheme, which will last for four to six years.

The fleet of a franchise is proposed to comprise up to 200 vehicles.

The Government will conduct a review upon completion of the trial scheme.

Committee chairman Larry Kwok said members agreed that the introduction of premium taxis should help provide passengers with an additional choice and address the needs of passenger groups with higher disposable income.

Members were also briefed on the proposal to increase the seating capacity of minibuses by up to three seats, to meet passenger demand during the peak hours.

The committee was also briefed on the views collected during a public consultation on the requirements of the new Kowloon Motor Bus franchise.

Members noted that discussion with the bus company on the new franchise will soon start, and the Government will take comments collected through the consultation into consideration.
