Illegal structures confirmed

June 22, 2016

The Lands Department has looked into the suspected irregularities concerning squatter structures and illegal occupation of government land in Tung Ah Pui Village, Shek O.

The irregularities were previously reported by the media.

The department confirmed that there were two squatter structures with unauthorised extensions and one with unauthorised structures on its roof.

It will issue warnings to ask the occupants to rectify the irregularities within 28 days, or else their Squatter Control Survey records will be cancelled and their squatter structures demolished.

Meanwhile, eight jetties, one barbecue platform and several low walls located along the coast at Tung Ah Pui Village were also confirmed to be illegal structures, and will be removed by the department.

It has formed a task force to review the guidelines on squatter control actions, and will conduct improvement measures. They include that, for any new extension completed after today, enforcement actions will be taken such as cancelling the squatter survey number instantly and demolishing the whole unauthorised structure on government land immediately.

Director of Lands Bernadette Linn said: “The Lands Department understands that members of the public have expectations for the Government's enforcement work. Hopefully, the actions against the cases of Tung Ah Pui Village and the improvement measures announced today will clarify the facts, manifest fairness and impartiality, and raise the effectiveness of enforcement work over squatter structures."
