Housing chief sorry for lead issue

May 31, 2016

Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung has apologised for the lead in drinking water incident, saying the Housing Authority and Housing Department underestimated the risks that caused the problem and did not require tests on pipe joints.

In a press conference today Prof Cheung admitted the authority underperformed in the lead in drinking water incident, adding he is deeply regretful. He apologised to the public and the affected residents.

The authority and the department have introduced systemic improvements since the incident, he said, adding he agreed with the Commission of Inquiry into Excess Lead Found in Drinking Water recommendation to boost staff knowledge on drinking water quality.

He said the department should have a stronger safety and quality control culture and be vigilant against different risks.

The authority will pursue the contractors and the commission's report will be submitted to the authority's tender committee for follow up.

The authority will hold an informal meeting on June 3 to gauge member's views and discuss the way forward, Prof Cheung added.
