The Buildings Department said today it is looking into last night’s collapse of a section of Block 4 of the Central Police Station Compound.
The compound comprises three groups of buildings: the former Central Police Station, the former Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison with a total of 16 existing buildings. Block 4, the former married inspectors' quarters, is three-storeys tall and made of bricks and timber.
Last night, parts of the roof and first and second floors measuring eight metres by 10 metres had collapsed.
The building has been closed for further investigation, a clear-up and temporary propping and strengthening.
Department staff have yet to gain access to the collapsed portion for detailed inspection, as clearance and strengthening works are still being carried out.
They have been conducting inspections of other buildings in the compound to ascertain their overall structural safety condition, while approved structural strengthening works to adjacent Blocks 6 and 7, which are of similar construction, have already been carried out.
