The two-day Aviation Safety Conference 2016, jointly held by the Civil Aviation Department and the Hong Kong Aviation Industry Association, was completed successfully today, attracting over 250 representatives from more than 50 civil aviation authorities, regional organisations and the industry.
The conference brought experts from the International Civil Aviation Organisation and regulatory authorities together to discuss strategies to manage key challenges facing aviation safety professionals worldwide, and to share views on the way forward.
Noting the aviation industry supports 58 million jobs globally and generates more than $2.4 trillion in economic activity, the organisation's former secretary general Raymond Benjamin said at the conference that the growth of a safe, efficient, economically viable and green transport network directly benefits the global economy.
Projecting that air traffic will double by 2030, he said safety remains the top priority, noting that further collaboration and consensus through the organisation will continue to be the best strategy forward.
Director-General of Civil Aviation Norman Lo, also speaking at the conference, called for stronger efforts among aviation safety sectors to meet the challenges in the coming decade, adding that hosting similar conferences will enable them to meet such challenges on a collective basis.
The department said it will continue to explore opportunities to promote safety and strengthen safety partnership with authorities and industry partners in the region.
