Express Rail train schedule not final

May 03, 2016

The Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link train schedule has yet to be finalised and a document quoted in a newspaper article was for reference only, the Transport & Housing Bureau said in a statement today.

The newspaper reported today that nearly all trains departing from the West Kowloon Terminus would be those with intermediate stops and that there would only be a few direct trains to Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

The bureau clarified that the China Railway Siyuan Survey & Design Group Co Ltd mentioned in the article was engaged by the MTR Company to study the operation and maintenance of the rail link's Hong Kong Section.

The operation details mentioned are contained in a report it produced in 2009 for reference in planning the train schedule and are not the final operation plan, the bureau added.

During planning of the rail link in 2009, the Government considered various options for train timetables, and the destinations and arrangements of intermediate stops for each train would be different.

For example, trains departing from West Kowloon would terminate at Futian or Humen, and for services between Hong Kong and Guangzhou South, there would be trains with intermediate stops and direct trains.

The estimated travelling time between Hong Kong and Guangzhou by train, which will be reduced significantly from about 100 minutes to 48 minutes, is based on direct trains from the West Kowloon to Guangzhou South, it added.

The Hong Kong side has been designing the project based on the 2009 plan and discussing operation details such as train schedules, number of intermediate stops and the relevant travelling time with Mainland authorities and operators.

The bureau reiterated that there are considerations such as patronage demand, train operation and both the Hong Kong and Mainland resource allocation in formulating the train service schedule and that so far, the future train schedule has not been finalised.
