Airport reclamation approved

April 29, 2016

The Chief Executive in Council has authorised the reclamation around Hong Kong International Airport for its expansion into a three-runway system to meet Hong Kong's long-term air traffic demands.

The decision was made after considering the objections received.

An area of 1,640 hectares of foreshore and sea-bed in waters north of the airport will be reclaimed.

The works include: formation of 650 hectares of land by ground improvement and sea-bed filling; seawall construction; approach lights and beacons; and diversion of one set of existing 11 kilovolt, six-kilometre-long submarine cables.

The Airport Authority will commence works at the earliest opportunity and the entire three-runway system project is expected to take around eight years to complete.

The extent of the area affected is described in a notice of authorisation gazetted today.

Those who believe their interests will be affected by the reclamation can write to the Director of Lands by April 29, 2017.
