The second-term Lantau Development Advisory Committee held its first meeting today to review the Government’s public engagement exercise for the proposed Lantau development strategy and the progress of strategic studies and district improvement works.
Secretary for Development Paul Chan who chairs the committee, said four non-official members from the environment and conservation, recreation and tourism, innovation and technology, and aviation sectors have been appointed to the committee for this term to provide suggestions for developing Lantau into a smart and low-carbon community.
The committee also discussed this year’s work plan and agreed to establish three subcommittees to launch work as soon as possible on publicity, sustainable development, and traffic, transport and district improvement.
In addition to the promotional and consultation work during the public engagement exercise, a special meeting was held by the Legislative Council Development Panel on April 16 for people to express their views. The LegCo Secretariat also received 140 submissions from those who were unable to attend the meeting.
"We have received a large number of views on multiple aspects from the public. There are views for and against our proposals. Some urge for more detailed assessment studies," Mr Chan said.
Noting that the suggestions involve a great deal of work in a short period of time, he proposed a multi-disciplinary and dedicated office be formed soon and hoped the lawmakers at next week’s Development Panel meeting would support his proposal.
Mr Chan added that the Blueprint for Lantau Development is expected to be announced at the end of the year to set a timetable for the studies and projects.
