Bridge opening date to be discussed

November 27, 2015

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge's opening date will still need to be discussed by the three governments, Acting Secretary for Transport & Housing Yau Shing-mu said today.

The Highways Department has set a new target for completing the Hong Kong section of the bridge: the end of 2017, due to construction difficulties including an unstable supply of materials, labour shortages and environmental protection requirements.

At a press briefing today, Mr Yau said that even if the works are completed by the end of next year, the bridge's opening date will need to be discussed by the three sides.

At the same briefing, Director of Highways Lau Ka-keung noted that the total project cost on the Hong Kong-side would be about $36 billion.

He noted that the assessment of the budget cost had already taken into account any contingencies.

Mr Lau added that any delays would not affect the $5.4 billion in additional funding that is awaiting approval by the Legislative Council.
