Commercial vehicles get parking priority

June 24, 2015

The Government's policy in providing parking spaces is to accord priority to meeting demand from commercial vehicles.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung told legislators today commercial vehicles have substantive demand for parking spaces in their daily operations, and have been playing an important role in the logistics and tourism industries, and the overall economy.

Private cars, however, are not essential as a transport mode. Currently, 90% of commuters use public transport services.

The Government will still provide an appropriate number of parking spaces for private cars, but will not encourage commuters to use cars instead of public transport, he said.

The hourly parking spaces provided by government car parks account for 3% of the total number of hourly parking spaces in Hong Kong, with the rest operated by commercial entities.

The Government will review its parking policy soon, Prof Cheung added.
