Society urged to focus on livelihoods

June 20, 2015

Secretary for Development Paul Chan says he hopes the community can re-focus on economic and livelihood issues, which are very important to Hong Kong, now that the political reform proposal has been settled.

Speaking to reporters after a radio programme today, Mr Chan also urged citizens to set aside their political differences and concentrate their energy on how to improve people’s livelihood.

Responding to questions on the Hung Shui Kiu New Development Plan, he noted the project will provide more than 60,000 housing units and create 15,000 jobs, enabling some residents to work in the same district, as well as reducing pressure on the transport infrastructure.

Mr Chan pointed out that in planning for the new development, the Government has not only considered residential needs, but the importance of creating jobs.

He said applications for different infrastructure projects and feasibility studies are being lined up for the Legislative Council's consideration, adding that the Government will continue to work hard to engage legislators about the importance of those projects.

As for the progress in developing the northeast New Territories, Mr Chan said there are procedures to follow, but he hoped the relevant funding application could be put to LegCo next year.
