The Drainage Services Department's Happy Valley underground stormwater storage scheme received the Highly Commended New Engineering Contract (NEC) Large Project of the Year 2015 award in London yesterday.
The prize was established by the UK's NEC Users' Group to recognise NEC projects around the world with an outstanding performance.
Attending the prize presentation ceremony, Deputy Director of Drainage Services Mak Ka-wai said his department has been committed to promoting NECs to nurture mutual trust and partnering spirit between contracting parties to enhance cost-effectiveness and reduce risks.
The project team has adopted the "one team, one goal" approach to set common targets and working objectives for crucial aspects like construction time, costs, quality, safety and environmental protection.
The project team also held the "Knowing Me, Knowing You" workshop to help all parties understand each other's concerns to overcome challenges during the project.
Built at the Happy Valley Recreation Ground, the scheme involves the construction of an underground stormwater storage tank with a capacity of 60,000 cubic metres, about the size of 24 standard swimming pools.
Phase 1 of the scheme come into operation last month while the entire project is scheduled for commission before the 2018 rainy season.
Upon completion, the flood protection level of Happy Valley and the vicinity will be substantially enhanced.
