The Government will begin a consultancy study this year on extending the Ngong Ping cable car system to Tai O, Secretary for Development Paul Chan revealed today.
Addressing reporters after a Lantau Development Advisory Committee meeting, Mr Chan said the study will take about 12 to 18 months and would include a public consultation and various technical assessments.
He noted that the local community has been calling for an improvement in transport facilities to boost tourism to Tai O, adding that the Government would be mindful of striking a balance between conservation and development.
In outlining the committee’s progress, Mr Chan said its initial view was that Northwest Lantau could develop heritage, cultural and natural tourism, while South Lantau could develop leisure and water sports centres as well as eco-conservation and green tourism.
