Brownfield development mooted

January 21, 2015

Secretary for Development Paul Chan says the Government is considering moving industries operating on brownfields into multistory buildings to release land for development.

Speaking to reporters today, Mr Chan said the brownfields near Hung Shui Kiu will be the first location to test the idea.

He said a rough estimate shows that using two hectares of land to build multistory buildings can accommodate industries operating on 10 hectares of brownfields.

Compensation will be provided in accordance with established policies and procedures, he said, adding the process will be transparent.

Speaking on action against sub-divided housing, Mr Chan said the process has been delayed as enforcement officers are always denied entry into these premises.

He also said interim housing will be provided to those affected by the enforcement action, and the Community Care Fund will also provide assistance.
