The Government has been implementing a host of measures to cope with the tight manpower situation in the construction industry.
Secretary for Development Paul Chan told legislators today the measures include enhancing training for local construction workers and attracting more new entrants to join the industry.
Contractors having genuine difficulty in recruiting suitable staff locally can consider applying to import workers through the Supplementary Labour Scheme.
The Government enhanced the scheme in April to expedite preparatory work for applications involving 26 trades with manpower shortages, which has shortened the processing time from 7.5 months to 4.5.
It will maintain close liaison with the industry to explore further enhancements on importation of workers, Mr Chan added.
