Express rail work delayed

April 15, 2014

The completion date for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link’s Hong Kong section has been postponed due to construction delays.

Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung made the announcement today, saying he was surprised and disappointed to learn of the situation.

He said the Mass Transit Railway Corporation notified him at the weekend that the latest assessment shows that construction work cannot be completed next year as scheduled.

He ordered the corporation to submit a progress report and explain the situation to the public as soon as possible.

He said the Director of Highways will conduct an independent review of the project’s progress.

The Government will report the situation to the Legislative Council next month.

Construction started in 2010 and was due for completion next year, followed by up to nine months of testing.
