Lantau development beneficial: CE

April 04, 2014

Chief Executive CY Leung says the development of Lantau and its vicinity will help ease the increasing pressure on existing commercial areas.

Mr Leung made the comments after inspecting the work progress of the Hong Kong boundary crossing facilities of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge today.

He told the media the Government is planning to turn the artificial island housing the facilities into a popular tourist destination.

With the island’s proximity to Hong Kong International Airport, it will also serve as a gateway for Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, and take on great value as a "bridgehead economy".

The opening of the bridge in 2016 will turn Lantau into the converging point of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, enhancing its functions and development potential.

Mr Leung said a balance between development and conservation will be maintained to fulfil long-term development needs and boost Hong Kong’s competitiveness.
