Marine chief regrets ferry tragedy

May 16, 2013
Director of Marine Francis Liu feels sadness and regret over the causalities caused by the Lamma Island ferry tragedy, and for the deficiencies in the departmental system revealed by the incident.

Responding to media enquiries today, the Marine Department said Mr Liu expressed his deep sadness over the collision at a press conference on April 30.

It said the director shared the same feelings as Secretary for Transport & Housing Anthony Cheung, who felt sadness and regret over the incident.

Mr Liu said the department has learned a lesson from the incident, and that as its head, he is responsible and will closely supervise all staff in implementing improvement measures to ensure safety.

The department's report into the collision will be submitted to the Transport & Housing Bureau upon completion. If the investigation finds the department had any maladministration or negligence in duty, it will be dealt with in accordance with procedures. If a criminal issue is involved, it will be handled in accordance with legal procedures.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive CY Leung said tonight that the Government understands the feelings of the victims’ families, and the survivors, and it has attached much importance to the ferry tragedy.

The Government will carry out follow-up actions on the report submitted by the inquiry commission into the tragedy, to ensure no repeat incidents in future.

He said the Government will help the families and survivors by providing assistance, in response to their requests.
