Tung Chung housing plans on track

January 09, 2013
Secretary for Transport & Housing Prof Anthony Cheung said a public rental housing development in Tung Chung Area 56 is expected to be completed in 2016.

It had been zoned ‘Residential (Group A)’ since 2001, and the development plan had never been shelved, Prof Cheung told lawmakers today.

“The foundation work of this project commenced in May 2012 and the project is expected to be completed in 2016,” he said.

It will include four 41-storey domestic blocks with about 3,600 public rental housing flats for about 9,900 people. It will also include a carpark, open space, retail facilities and community and welfare facilities.

The Housing Authority consulted the Islands District Council on the development proposal at the site in February 2009. It revised the development proposal in response to the views of Islands District Council Members and the local community, and consulted the council in June and August 2011.

Prof Cheung added the Government will provide adequate transport facilities.  “A new road will be constructed to connect different sites in the area to the existing Ying Hei Road and Man Tung Road nearby.”

The new road will be divided into southern and northern portions with the provision of lay-bys suitable for public transport use, he said, noting it is scheduled for completion in 2015/2016 to tie in with the development’s completion.

The Transport Department will monitor public transport demand alongside the population increase arising from the public rental housing development in the site and its surrounding areas, and will suitably adjust the district's transport provision.
