URA applauded

June 22, 2011
The Development Bureau has hailed the Urban Renewal Authority for its work in the 2010-11 year, and for its support during the Urban Renewal Strategy review.

In a Legislative Council paper submitted today, the bureau said it trusts the authority will build on its past success, and achieve a truly “people-first, district-based and public participatory approach” in urban renewal.

It said the authority responded quickly in developing implementation details for the new Urban Renewal Strategy.

The major initiatives included the launch of the flat-for-flat scheme, taking on a new facilitator role in redevelopment, introducing a demand-led model in redevelopment, participating in the work of the District Urban Renewal Forum, and injecting $500 million to set up the Urban Renewal Trust Fund.

Under the new strategy, the authority is tasked with adopting redevelopment and rehabilitation as its core businesses.

It will set up the first Urban Renewal Resource Centre to provide one-stop services, and will gradually expand its rehabilitation promotion and support programme to cover the whole city.
