Hong Kong International Airport handled 4.1 million passengers and 346,000 tonnes of cargo in September, up 16.9% and 13.9% compared with same period last year, the Airport Authority says.

Aircraft movements grew 15.9% to 26,140.

The cargo volume rise was due to robust exports, which surged 18% year-on-year. Major consumption markets in North America and Europe saw double-digit year-on-year growth.

Traffic by Hong Kong residents and visitors rose 19% and 17% compared to last year. All key regions saw year-on-year growth, with the Mainland and Southeast Asia performing best.

Transfer and transit passengers grew 15% year-on-year while imports rose 9% and transshipments increased 10%.

Airport Authority Chief Executive Officer Stanley Hui said air traffic will continue rising.

"If everything goes well we are confident that HKIA will achieve record volumes in both passenger and cargo throughput this year, strengthening HKIA's position as a leading international and regional aviation centre," he said.

From July to September the airport handled 13.5 million passengers, a 14.3% year-on-year increase, indicating vigorous growth in the passenger market. Flight movements grew 15% while the increase in cargo tonnage narrowed to 18.4%.
