Bogus health documents probed

September 21, 2017

The Centre for Food Safety has uncovered suspected falsified health certificates for frozen meat imported from Brazil.

The products include chicken feet and livestock offal meant for pet consumption.

Investigations found that since October, 10 consignments of pet food products had been imported from Brazil by an exporter.

The health certificates for these consignments were issued on or before March 21, the day the centre announced the import ban on Brazilian frozen and chilled meat and poultry.

One of the consignments was 27 tonnes of frozen chicken feet which, according to information provided by the importer, had been sold to a buyer.

Major local retailers have been contacted and so far that consignment has not been found on sale locally.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the consignment has been re-exported.

The centre has asked Brazil to confirm the authenticity of the health certificates of the remaining nine consignments, eight of them having been either re-exported to the Mainland or Vietnam, and the ninth being kept at the container terminal.

It has also suspended the import of products to Hong Kong by the exporter and two Brazilian production plants listed on the health certificates.

The case has been referred to Police and Brazilian authorities.
