Imported EU eggs withheld from sale

August 14, 2017

The Centre for Food Safety has withheld eggs imported from Europe from sale until tests show they are safe for consumption.

The new measure was adopted today after the insecticide fipronil was found in some eggs from the Netherlands.

The centre has enhanced checks on eggs imported from Europe and found no more problematic eggs.

The centre said the problematic Dutch eggs have been recalled by the importer and will be sent to a landfill for disposal.

The centre is liaising with the Rapid Alert System for Food & Feed of the European Commission as well as the Dutch and Belgian authorities over the incident.
