Encephalitis case reported

(July 20, 2017)

The Centre for Health Protection today reported the third case of Japanese encephalitis in Hong Kong this year.
 
It involves a 52-year-old man who was in Grantham Hospital during the virus' incubation period.
 
He was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital on May 10 for an organ transplant.
 
He had a fever and decreased consciousness on July 6 after receiving a blood transfusion in Grantham Hospital, followed by acute confusion and twitching on July 8.
 
He was transferred to the intensive care unit of Queen Mary Hospital on July 14.
 
He tested positive for Japanese encephalitis and is in critical condition.
 
The centre is investigating the source of infection.
