Secretary for Home Affairs Lau Kong-wah today led a Hong Kong Cantonese opera delegation to meet Guangdong Department of Culture Director-General Fang Jianhong in Guangzhou.

They discussed deepening Cantonese opera exchanges and co-operation between the two places in promotion, preservation, research and development.

Delegation members included Chinese Artists Association Artistic Director Law Ka-ying, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority Performing Arts Executive Director Louis Yu and Academy for Performing Arts Council Chairman Prof Stephen Chow.

Mr Lau said the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government attaches great importance to the development of Cantonese opera and allocates resources every year to promote it.

Cantonese opera exchanges and co-operation between Hong Kong and Guangdong started in 2002.

The art form became the first world intangible cultural heritage item co-owned by Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau in 2009, and they signed a letter of intent to jointly promote Cantonese opera development.

The delegation also visited the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theatre, the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe and the Cantonese Opera Art Museum.

Yesterday the delegation toured the Wanfutai venue and the Guangdong Dance & Drama College in Foshan.
