Little threat from system hacking

August 26, 2016

There is little threat of a mass leakage of personal data after the recent hacking of the Department of Health’s record system.

The department made the statement today, saying the hacker did not access the Clinical Information Management System database.

However, the hacker might have gained access to the system's temporary files. If so, no more than 4% would have been affected, it said.

More than 16,000 temporary files were on the server that was tampered with, among which almost 12,000 contained personal or clinical information.

The files were mainly registration information, documents issued to clients like sick leave and attendance certificates, and partial medical records like laboratory test results and incomplete medical notes covering antenatal, clinical genetic, dental, professional development and quality assurance, and social hygiene services.

Although the risk of massive leakage of personal data is low, the department said it attaches great importance to the incident and regrets it.

Letters have been sent to notify those with data in the files, and advise them to be vigilant against any illegal use of their personal information and to contact Police if required.

No reports of confirmed personal information leakage due to this incident have been received so far.
