Imported Zika case reported

August 25, 2016

The Centre for Health Protection is investigating the first imported case of Zika virus infection in Hong Kong and has urged the public to adopt strict anti-mosquito measures and practise safe sex during travel.

The case involves a 38-year-old woman who visited Saint Barthelemy in the Caribbean from August 6 to 20 and was bitten by mosquitoes.

She came down with joint pain and red eyes after returning to Hong Kong and was put in isolation at United Christian Hospital tonight after testing positive for the Zika virus. She is in stable condition.

Noting the case will be reported to the World Health Organisation, Centre for Health Protection Controller Dr Leung Ting-hung said the Government will contact doctors and hospitals to alert them to the case.

"We will carry out preventive and control measures to prevent further spread of the disease. As this is essentially a mosquito-born disease, the most important thing is to control the mosquito population in Hong Kong."

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will conduct mosquito surveys and implement control measures in areas visited by the patient since her return.
