Community cinema promotes art

August 23, 2016

Oi!, a Grade II historic building in North Point, has been transformed into a "Montage Express" community cinema running from now until January 2 next year.

It will screen a series of works produced by film directors and filmmakers of the new generation.

Located at 12 Oil Street, the structure was built in 1908 as the clubhouse of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

The programme co-operates with six collaborators from the film and art industries, aiming to promote local film productions and to promote art in the city.

During the programme period, each collaborator will present a three-week screening programme with a different focus, to explore contemporary issues through diverse perspectives.

The films on the reel include those from the Hong Kong New Wave in the 1970s, Korean animations, and award-winning independent short films.

Art practitioners who work with moving images will share their views with the public.

A small exhibition in the cinema will present home movie cameras from the 1920s to the 1960s, together with footage of old Hong Kong street scenes taken by Western travellers.

Admission is free with limited seats, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
