Ovitrap index drops

August 23, 2016

The monthly ovitrap index for July dropped to 11.8% from 13.5% in June.

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department said that among the 52 areas surveyed last month, seven areas exceeded the 20% alert level - Tuen Mun North, Tin Hau, Yuen Chau Kok, Kai Tak North, Deep Water Bay, and Repulse Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui East and Ngau Chi Wan.

The department has activated an inter-departmental anti-mosquito response mechanism in those areas.

The department will clear potential mosquito breeding grounds in public places and apply larvicides to stagnant water.

It will also handle mosquito complaints promptly and carry out prosecutions under the ordinance against mosquito breeding.

For port areas, the monthly ovitrap index for July dropped slightly to 2.3% from 2.4% in June.

The ovitrap indices reflect the prevalence of Aedes albopictus, a mosquito vector for Dengue fever and Zika virus transmission.
